Attorney General Marc Dann says at least four people with serious mental illnesses improperly held permits to carry concealed weapons in Ohio. Dann says his office has found that psychological reviews required by law were not completed by the staff of the previous attorney general.
The AG's office is responsible for checking lists of applicants and permit holders against previous court rulings that would show whether a person has needed involuntary hospitalization for a mental illness.
But Dann, who's a Democrat, says those checks didn't happen under his Republican predecessor, Jim Petro.
Petro is now a lawyer in private practice. He didn't immediately return a message seeking for comment.
