Honda of America says it will build a new $550,000,000 auto assembly plant in southeast Indiana. Company executives traveled to Greensburg, Indiana today to make the announcement.
Indiana was chosen over other sites being considered, including two sites in Ohio. The new plant is expected to eventually employ 2,000 workers.
Miami University professor and auto industry expert, James Rubenstein says even though Ohio lost the competition for the new plant it will provide most of the transmissions and engines for the cars built in Indiana. "most of the suppliers that will be shipping to Indiana will be based in Ohio. nased although Ohio has to be disappointed that the new plant ." Says Rubernstein.
But, the mayor of a northwest Ohio city in the running for a new Honda car plant says he's disappointed that the company has decided to build in Indiana. Van Wert Mayor Don Farmer says his team is keeping its head up and enjoyed the opportunity to play in the ball game.Farmer adds that publicity about Honda considering the site may have generated interest, and officials will try to attract another company.
Van Wert County was one of two sites promoted to Honda by Ohio. The other was in rural Fayette County, about 45 miles southwest of Columbus.
