The nation's military base closing commission has voted to keep the military accounting center in Columbus.
The Columbus Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) center employs about 2,000 employees.
Earlier this summer the commission said it might consider consolidating accounting centers, prompting fears the Columbus facility would close.
Members also voted to position the Cleveland accounting office to grow by at least 400 jobs.
The pentagon wanted to close the cleveland office, which would have cut some 1,200 jobs.Congressman David Hobson praised the work of DFAS employees and says that main reason the offices remain open.
Earlier Thursday, the commission voted to keep the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-patterson air force base near Dayton.
Commissioners had looked into the possibility of merging the institute with another school in California.
The institute employs 500 workers and has 900 students.
