Agreement made to divert water from Great Lakes

Regional leaders from the United States and Canada just proposed the Great Lakes Compact that allows water diversion from the lakes and improves their water quality. This goal to improve water quality agrees with ongoing efforts.

Mike Hoggarth of OSU's Museum of Biological Diversity, says development of coastal areas and the introduction of non-native species are the two main threats to the health of the Great Lakes.

The new agreement allows Great Lakes water to be diverted to areas in the Midwest, but areas like the parched Southwest are denied access. The announcement of the agreement begins a 90-day period for public comment.
