Admittedly, municipal charter amendments aren’t the most exciting topics on the ballot in a year when the balance of the U.S. House and Senate could be in question. But, in ways big and small, they can change the way local government works.
Numerous such amendments have been proposed around Northeast Ohio, and the deadline has passed for cities to place them on the Nov. 6 ballot.
In Strongsville, for instance, an amendment would require that candidates for police and fire chief have bachelor’s degrees. Read the list of Cuyahoga County issues here.
A Macedonia amendment would allow council to suspend or dock the pay of a council member on the grounds of malfeasance. A two-thirds vote of the remaining members would be required. Read Summit County's list of issues here.
The election is in less than 60 days, and the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office says absentee ballot applications are in the mail headed to registered voters.
Two more rounds of mailing are expected in October.
