Music in Mid-Ohio is Classical 101's presentation of our local concert life.

New broadcasts are on hiatus as local performances are cancelled due to the coronavirus safety measures.

Shows might be on hold, but music does not stop. Please check this site regularly as Music in Mid-Ohio goes on line! We’ll be presenting recent performances given in Central Ohio...or given by talented local artists as they travel.

It’s a privilege to remind everyone of the riches of Columbus concert life.

This is the Ohio State University Symphony conducted by Miriam Burns.

Kurt Masur appointed Burns as his cover conductor of the New York Philharmonic, early in her career. Today, she holds music directorships in New York and Virginia. A conducting career that has taken Miriam Burns all over the world has brought her back to Central Ohio. She's currently on the faculty of the School of Music at The Ohio State University, where her duties include conducting the OSU Symphony.

This performance was recorded in Hughes Hall last January 29. The orchestra played an ambitious program.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Dt8aWNiJ8

Mozart’s music balances delicacy with passion. The proper balance is the job of the conductor, here splendidly accomplished. The Cosi fan tutte overture is working if it makes the listener smile. I grinned all through this performance.

There was also an accomplished performance of a prelude that changed music. Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde is not for beginners.  It is for students, because if you can bring off these rich harmonies you can play anything. What was a wonderful surprise.

I loved this concert. These OSU students can play!

Christopher Purdy is Classical 101's early morning host, 7-10 a.m. weekdays. He is host and producer of Front Row Center – Classical 101’s weekly celebration of Opera and more – as well as Music in Mid-Ohio, Concerts at Ohio State, and the Columbus Symphony broadcast series. He is the regular pre-concert speaker for Columbus Symphony performances in the Ohio Theater.
