It's that time again; concert season. Here's a sneak peek at what's in store this Autumn around Columbus:
September Concerts:
9/11/16, 4:00 PM: Mozart's Requiem Memorial Concert at First Congregational Church
One of the most moving choral-orchestral works in the entirety of the Classical repertoire will be brought to life by the musicians of the First Congregational Church and First Church choir in memory of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. (free of charge; free-will donation to be collected)
9/11/16, 7:00 PM: "There is a two-fold silence" free concert at Highlands Presbyterian Church
The Highlands Presbyterian Church continues their Second Sunday Concert Series with an hour of new compositions by Michael Rene Torres. A recent winner of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and the Greater Columbus Arts Council Composition Fellowship, Torres's selections for the afternoon include three world-premieres which explore the sounds and psychological affectations of consonance and dissonance. Musicians include: flutist, Erin Helgeson Torres; percussionist, Nomi Joy Marcus; and pianist, Hector Garcia. (free of charge)
9/16-18/16, various times: The Mikado, Capital University Conservatory of Music
Students of the Capital University Conservatory of Music will perform in a traditional staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, directed by Mark Baker with music conducted by William Boggs. ($20 admission)
9/18/16, 3:00 PM: Organist Todd Wilson Performs Complete Works of Duruflé
St. Joseph's Cathedral, Columbus, will host organist Todd Wilson, head of the Organ Department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and Curator of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall in Cleveland, for an afternoon concert featuring the complete organ works of Maurice Duruflé. ($10 suggested donation)
9/18/16, 3:30 PM: Fior Angelico/ Early Music in Columbus
The choral ensemble Fior Angelico presents “La Serenissima Repubblica — Venetian Masters of the High Renaissance” with a pre-concert talk at 3:00 PM at the First Congregational Church, Columbus.
9/22-25/16, various times: Twisted II, a collaboration with BalletMet Columbus, Opera Columbus, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
Back by popular demand, the beloved collaborative project, Twisted, returns to the Ohio Theatre for four performances in September. Members of each ensemble will present favorites such as Wagner: "The Ride of the Valkyries" from Die Walküre, Gershwin: "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, and even Beethoven: “Ode to Joy” from Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 as you've never seen them before. 9/21/16, 7:00 PM: One Thing Leads to Another; A Tribute to Donald Harris at Short North Stage
When I saw the title to this concert, I realized immediately how perfect it is. Donald Harris was a beloved mentor, friend, professor, composer, and music educator for many of us here in Columbus. He was also a firm believer in the power of progression; literally one thing leading to another, ad infinitum. In light of this philosophy, the incredible Carpe Diem String Quartet will perform Harris' "Fantasy for Violin and Piano" (1957), "String Quartet" (1965) and "String Quartet No. 2" (2002). (free admission, reception to follow)
9/23-24/16, 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM:Two Cabaret Shows by the OSU Opera and Lyric Theatre
Students from the Ohio State University School of Music's Opera and Lyric Theatre department present both Anything Cole’s: A Cole Porter Cabaret followed by Hearts and Music: A Celebration of William Finn and Jason Robert Brown live at the Green Room at The Garden Theatre in the Short North. (Seating is limited and reservations are suggested.)
9/24/16, 8:00 PM: Formosa Quartet presented by Chamber Music Columbus
This is an opportunity to catch the winners of the First Prize and the Amadeus Prize at the London International String Quartet Competition (2006) and one of the most celebrated string quartets in the world at The Southern Theatre. This particular concert also presents the unique experience titled, From Hungary to Taiwan. Works include: Shih-Hui Chen: Fantasia on the Theme of Plum Blossom (Formosa Quartet commission), Dana Wilson: Hungarian Folk Songs (Formosa Quartet commission), Lei Liang: New Work (Formosa Quartet commission) and Béla Bartók's Quartet No. 4.
