Music of George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers on Next Fretworks

The next Fretworks for Labor Day weekend and the second week of September will begin with a rousing rendition of George Gershwin's Three Preludes for Piano arranged for four mandolins and performed by the Modern Mandolin Quartet.

It's three guitars next with the Colonge Trio, a German based ensemble and their take on music of French composer Georges Bizet.  They'll play the L'Arlesienne Suite from incidental music Bizet wrote for the 1872 play, "The Lady of Arles."

Guitarist Giovanni De Chiaro has recorded an entire CD  of music from Broadway for the Baton Rouge, Louisiana based label, Centaur Records.  From "The Guitar on Broadway," we'll hear him play his own arrangement of selections from South Pacific, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical with hits such as Some Enchanted Evening and Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair.

From Antonio Vivaldi, I'll have the Mandolin Concerto in C with soloist Ugo Orlandi back again this week on a fine recording with I Solisti Veneti conducted by Claudio Scimone.  American guitarist Sharon Isbin will play Mallorca from the Suite espanola by Isaac Albeniz.

Join me for Fretworks Saturday and Wednesday evenings at 7 on Classical 101.
