A Mandolin Concerto and "Gyspy Airs" on Fretworks

Katona Twins playing guitar at a concert
Courtsey of the artist
Music by the Katona Twins will be featured on the next episode of Fretworks

The next Fretworks on Saturday evening at 7, will feature the Mandolin Concerto in Eb from the late 18th century by Giovanni Paisiello.

Paisiello was born in Naples but traveled quite a bit and was known in France and Russia.  In our recording from the late 1980s, the fine Italian chamber orchestra I Solisti Veneti is conducted by Claudio Scimone and the soloist is Ugo Orlandi.

Also on the program, Zigeunerweisen, or Gypsy Airs by the 19th century Spanish violinist, composer Pablo de Sarasate.  English guitarist Nicola Hall is featured in a transcription of this violin showpiece performing with the London Mozart Players conducted by Andrew Litton.

This performance is from one of too few recordings from this very fine artist, made in the early 1990s, before her career as a virtuoso guitarist was sidelined by a tendonitis-type hand injury.

David Russell has solo guitar music with the Valses Poeticos by Enrique Granados, and the Katona Twins, a guitar duo from Hungary, will play the Chaconne in G by George Frederick Handel.  Finally, we'll hear a little Scott Joplin with the Linares Guitar Quartet playing Ragtime.

Join me Saturday and Wednesday evenings at 7 for music of the classical guitar on Fretworks on Classical 101.
