Carmen Suite for Four Guitars on Fretworks

Los Romeros, "The Royal Family of the Guitar," will be featured on the next Fretworks, performing a rousing rendition of the Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet.  This is music from the 1875 opera Carmen by the great French composer who so wonderfully captured the spirit of Spain in this instantly recognizable music. I'll also have the not-so-often heard Guitar Concerto No 3 in F by the early 19th century guitar virtuoso-composer Mauro Giuliani.  His First Guitar Concerto is his most popular and is heard quite a bit, but this one also has the same engaging qualities of melodic writing for the solo part and enjoyable late-classical orchestral accompaniment.  Pepe Romero, of the Romeros, is the guitarist with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields conducted by Neville Marriner. We'll also have time for Preludio by Federico Moreno Torroba played by guitarist Ana Vidovic.  An Allegro from the Violin Sonata No. 5 of  George Frideric Handel will be played in a arrangement for two Baroque archguitars by Peter Blanchette and Peter Michelini. Fretworks airs Saturday and Wednesday evenings at 7 on Classical 101. Above is a rare video clip with the Romeros on European television.
