Debussy, Bach and Flamenco on Next Fretworks

This week on Fretworks, we'll hear from a new Nimbus Records duo recital disc with the great Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco Pena and American guitarist Eliot Fisk.  They collaborated on traditional flamenco pieces and sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti.  We should have time for at least one of each. Music of Claude Debussy is also among the offerings for the hour.  The Children's Corner Suite from 1908 will be performed in an arrangement for three guitars by the Cologne Guitar Trio.  This charming music was written for piano and dedicated to Debussy's three year old daughter Chou-Chou. American guitarist Lynn Harting-Ware studied at Kent State University and at the University of Cincinnati/College Conservatory of Music.  She'll play several selections from the Goldberg Variations of J. S. Bach in her own arrangement for solo guitar. Along the way, we'll hear the Rondo in C by Mozart, originally for violin and orchestra, with Pepe Romero and the Academy of St. Martin-in the-Fields. Jeremy Jouve was the 2003 First Prize winner of the Guitar Foundation of America International Competition, and he will play the Sonata giocosa of Joaquin Rodrigo. Rodrigo's first guitar sonata was written in 1958, and this three-movement good-humored piece could just as easily been called a sonatina. Fretworks airs Saturday evening at 7 and Wednesday evening at 7 on Classical 101. http://youtu.be/PDdudDaWdqY
