Holiday Specials, Tune to Classical 101 All Season Long

Tune into Classical 101 all season long for special programming from all of us at the station! From Handel's Messiah to a New Year's celebration, Classical 101 is your one-stop shop to get you in the holiday spirit. Saturday, December 20 4pm • An Operavore Christmas An hour of Christmas and holiday music from the world of opera and oratorio sung by some of the greatest singers past and present. Sunday, December 21 3pm • Messiah from Washington National Cathedral Hear the Christmas portion of Messiah from the concert which attracts an audience of some 6,000 from the greater Washington, DC area. 4pm • Lessons and Carols at First Congregational Church The annual Christmas celebration in downtown Columbus, hosted by Classical 101’s John Rittmeyer. 10pm • Christmastime in New York: At the Metropolitan Museum The Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine performs a program spanning hundreds of years describing the story of the Nativity. Monday, December 22 8pm • Welcome Christmas! A perennial favorite featuring the Minneapolis-based ensemble VocalEssence, led by Philip Brunelle. Tuesday, December 23 8pm • A Chanticleer Christmas Spanning the globe and the centuries, this one-hour celebration of the season is told through the voices of Chanticleer, the 12-member San Francisco-based men’s choir. Wednesday, December 24 10am • A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols  Hosted by Michael Barone, this is the annual live broadcast from the chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. The 30-voice King’s College Choir performs the legendary service of Biblical readings and music. 8pm • CSO Holiday Pops Concert  A great Columbus holiday tradition continues as Ronald J. Jenkins leads the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in your favorite songs and carols. 10pm • Capital University’s 2013 Christmas Festival, And On Earth Peace Featuring performances by the 2012 World Choir Games Gold Medal-Winning Chapel Choir, along with Choral Union, Women’s Chorus, The Chordsmen, Philomel and a variety of instrumentalists Thursday, December 25 8pm • St. Olaf Christmas Festival An always sold-out service in song and word which takes place at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, featuring over 500 student musicians. Friday, December 26 9pm • Christmas with the Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs It’s a joyous celebration by two of the most prestigious, historically black institutions in the nation coming together to sing spirituals and carols. Saturday, December 27 4pm • Light and Gold: The Music of Eric Whitacre Eric Whitacre’s choral works are beloved by choirs throughout the world. He introduces the music and describes the backstory of how each piece came to be. Wednesday, December 31 8pm • Light and Gold: The Music of Eric Whitacre, Part 2 Thursday, January 1 11am • New Year’s Day from Vienna  The Vienna Philharmonic presents its annual salute to the waltz on New Year’s Day live from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. Hear the hits tunes of the Strauss family and others with Zubin Mehta on the podium.
