In the Key of 'D'anzmayr: Mess or Masterpiece?

I recently spoke to a history group about music education.  One of the things which came up was comparing Mozart's manuscripts to Beethoven's. Where Mozart's tend to be neatly written, seemingly already assemble in his mind before he began to write, Beethoven's appear to have been written by committee. Lines are scribble out, notes are changed, entire sections rewritten. The same can be said for the approach to performance. Some believe there is one way and one way only to perform music. Others say it is a fluid process which should be informed by the performers and the times. ProMusica Music Director David Danzmayr and I discussed that subject in today's conversation.
