Los Angeles Philharmonic on Classical Showcase

This evening on Classical Showcase, we begin a series of concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra with music director Gustavo Dudamel.  Several performances will be with former music director Esa-Pekka Salonen and a couple of other guest conductors between now and the end of December. At 7 pm this evening on Classical 101, the first concert features soloist Yefim Bronfman in the Piano Concerto No. 1 in b minor by Peter Tchaikovsky, one of the Russian composer's most popular and enduring works.  You'll also hear Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 4 in c minor, the one he called the Tragic. Also on the program is a new work, Peter Lieberson's Shing Kham, which was completed by Oliver Knussen after the composer's death in 2011. The L. A. Phil was founded in 1919 and has been called one of the most contemporary minded and forward thinking orchestras in the country.  Some of its notable former music directors include Artur Rodzinski, Otto Klemperer, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Andre Previn. The two most recent music directors, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel, have also garnered praise for their fine music-making and programming.
