Sharon Isbin Featured on Next Fretworks

One of the world's premier classical guitarists, Sharon Isbin will be featured on the next Fretworks, airing Saturday evening at 7 and Wednesday evening at 7 on Classical 101.  Along with several of her recordings, we'll hear part of a telephone conservation I had with her recently. We talked about the hour-long documentary Sharon Isbin: Troubadour that's airing on nearly 200 public television stations around the country and here in Central Ohio on WOSU-TV, Friday November 14 at 10 pm. Listeners to Fretworks know what a great guitarist she is because Sharon Isbin's fine recordings  appear regularly, but did you know that her music is also "out of this world," literally?  She describes how an interest in launching model rockets as a kid in Minnesota led to a space shuttle astronaut taking one of her CD's into space, along with a compact practice guitar that she helped develop. Also along the way in her stellar career, she has performed at the White House, had new works written for her by Tan Dun, John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, and others, as well as created the first guitar department at Julliard and directs the guitar program at the Aspen Music Festival.  This multi Grammy Award-winning guitarist has collaborated with outstanding contemporary musicians in music ranging from classical, rock, folk, jazz and Latin genres.  All this is in the upcoming TV documentary, which is narrated by NPR's Susan Stamberg. In addition to hearing Sharon Isbin, we'll also have on the program, the Amsterdam Guitar Trio for the Rondo in C by Chopin, Paul O'Dette with lute music of John Dowland, and Sergio and Odair Assad will be the soloists in the Concerto for Two Guitars by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
