The term "early music" evokes any number of images: a troubadour serenading his beloved from below her castle window, a band of instrumentalists accompanying courtly dancers, Lon Chaney as Quasimodo lurching around Notre Dame Cathedral. Wait. What? Adding to its rich offerings of early music and folk music in lively, unconventional performances, the early music ensemble Hesperus is now also the only group to create and perform early music scores to classic silent films. Tune in to Classical 101 this afternoon at 2:00 to hear Hesperus perform some of the Medieval and Renaissance music they've included in their score for the 1923 silent film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The musicians will also chat with me about their work merging the music of the distant past with the classic images of much more recent silent films, and about what we can expect to see and hear tomorrow evening when they perform their score for The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Bexley's Drexel Theatre on the Early Music in Columbus series. Jennifer Hambrick unites her extensive backgrounds in the arts and media and her deep roots in Columbus to bring inspiring music to central Ohio as Classical 101’s midday host. Jennifer performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before earning a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
