Not long ago, Milos Karadaglic's new recording of the Concierto de Aranjuez was featured on Fretworks. For the next program, airing Saturday evening at 7 and Wednesday at 7 pm on Classical 101, I'll have the second most popular work by Joaquin Rodrigo from that same release with the exciting young guitarist from Montenegro. Fantasia para un gentilhombre (Fantasy for a Gentleman) is a four movement suite for guitar and orchestra based on pieces by the 17th century Spanish guitarist-composer Gaspar Sanz. Rodrigo wrote it in 1954 for Andres Segovia, in part, it seems, as a way of making amends to him for not being able to premiere the Concierto de Aranjuez in 1940. The new recording of the Fantasy with Karadaglic and the London Philharmonic is as fine as that other Rodrigo concerto on the disc. Christopher Parkening and David Brandon will play Four Renaissance Pieces from their 1990 Angel Records release, "Virtuoso Duets." David Martinez will perform a transcription of a keyboard sonata from the 18th century by Domenico Scarlatti, and David Starobin has Reverie, from the 19th century virtuoso Giulio Regondi. A little more unusual perhaps, is the Theme and Variations in D, WoO44, by Beethoven for mandolin and piano. We'll hear mandolinist Alison Stephens along with Richard Burnett playing a fortepiano. A reminder that the Columbus Guitar Society is presenting their mid-season fundraiser with the Guitar Ensemble of the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, a group directed by Clare Callahan. The performance takes place Saturday, November 8th at 8 pm at Capital University's Huntington Recital Hall in Bexley General admission is only $5.
