Melodious Mozart and Monumental Bruckner on Classical Showcase

The next Classical Showcase on Friday evening at 7 pm features a concert from Carnegie Hall in New York with the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performing Mozart and Bruckner. Franz Welser-Moest, who recently resigned as director of the Vienna State Opera, will lead the Vienna Philharmonic. The Austrian conductor is also the music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, a job he's had since 2002. The first symphony on the program is Mozart's Symphony No. 28 in C, coming from his late teens when still living in Salzburg and is considered one of his finest early symphonies.  This rarely performed work could be considered something of an "undiscovered jewel." Before the massive Bruckner, a new work from a young contemporary Austrian composer, Johannes Maria Staud: On Comparative Meteorology, based on a short story by Polish author Bruno Schulz. http://youtu.be/nB0TSARvn4Q The all-Austrian music program concludes with one of the monumental Late-Romantic symphonies of Anton Bruckner, his Symphony No. 6, a work that was first performed by the Vienna Philharmonic at its premiere in 1883.  Like all of Bruckner's symphonies, this one, too, seems to be reaching for the divine, using the inspiration of Beethoven's Ninth as a starting point.
