This weekend promises to be nirvana for music lovers. ProMusica Chamber Orchestra is offering three different concerts over four days, free of charge, at Franklin Park Conservatory. Performances are at 8pm this Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday with the beautiful John F. Wolfe Palm House as the backdrop for the outdoor performances. Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, which received a standing ovation at it's premiere, opens the performances.  The ovation came in spite of the fact that the Adagio was the second movement of his String Quartet, such was the excitement.  He would soon turn it into a stand-alone piece. Austria and America join hands under the baton of Austrian-born David Danzmayr with two of Mozart's great Symphonies: No., 26, the Linz, and No. 38, the Prague, along with a Concerto for Cello and Wind Band by Austrian-born Friedrich Gulda, featuring ProMusica Principal Cello Marc Moskovitz. On the American side of the ledger, Principal Flute Katherine DeJongh solos in American composer Lowell Liebermann's Flute Concerto.  American-born William Grant Still takes you on a tour of the eastern United States in The East from The American Scene. German composers round out the three-concert series: Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, Beethoven's Symphony No. 1, and J.S. Bach's Concerto for Two Violins featuring Concertmaster Katherine McLin and Co-principal Violin Marjorie Bagley. Music Director David Danzmayr leads the orchestra for three programs in this beautiful, elegant, yet casual setting. Come as you are. Pack a picnic. Stroll the grounds. Let the kids play.
