Fourth of July Weekend on The American Sound, 6pm Saturday

When your birthday falls on a weekend (and I, for one, consider Friday an honorary weekend day), you celebrate all weekend long, right? This year the Fourth of July falls on a Friday, and that means there's an entire weekend to celebrate America's birthday by cooking out with family and friends, simmering in the midsummer heat and, on Saturday, July 5th, listening to the inspiring American classical music on The American Sound. Saturday evening on The American Sound, we'll explore the vast stylistic diversity of American classical music with John Novacek's Melancholy Drag. We'll experience blues, Cajun music and music of the Cheyenne Nation in David Amram's American Dance Suite. We'll enjoy a pastiche of borrowed hymns, Civil war songs, patriotic tunes, and spirituals in Charles Ives' Three Places in New England. And think of it as music for Tax Day in July: Benjamin Carr's Federal Overture. Please join me for the Fourth of July, Part Two, Saturday, July 5, at 6 p.m., on The American Sound on Classical 101.

Jennifer Hambrick unites her extensive backgrounds in the arts and media and her deep roots in Columbus to bring inspiring music to central Ohio as Classical 101’s midday host. Jennifer performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before earning a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
