Mozart Minute: A Chip off the Old Block

The winter of 1785 was a flurry of activity for Mozart. Not long after his success with The Abduction of the Seraglio, Mozart was in the midst of moving his family to larger home to prepare for the arrival of his son, Karl Thomas Mozart. In spite of this busy schedule, Mozart still found time for many performances, and was just beginning to work on the Marriage of Figaro.

Leopold Mozart left a portrait of baby Karl in a letter to his daughter, Nannerl, quoted here in Emily Anderson's translation: "Little Karl is the picture of [Wolfgang Mozart]. He seems very healthy, but now and then, of course, children have troubles with their teeth. On the whole the child is charming, for he is extremely friendly and laughs when spoken to. I have only seen him cry once, the next moment he started to laugh."
