Dvorak for Mandolins and Mozart on Guitar on Fretworks

The next Fretworks broadcast Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101 will feature guitar, lute and mandolins.  The Modern Mandolin Quartet will start the hour with the finale from Antonin Dvorak's American Quartet, the String Quartet No. 12 in F in an arrangement for four mandolins from their CD, "Americana." The early 19th century guitarist composer Fernando Sor must really have liked the music from Mozart's opera The Magic Flute.  He wrote a famous set of variations on a theme by Mozart from the opera, the Op.9, then he revisited this rich mine of wonderful tunes in his Op. 19, Six Airs From Mozart's "The Magic Flute."  We'll hear Manuel Barrueco perform them. Norbert Kraft will be the guitarist for an interesting arrangement of the Valses Poeticos of Spanish composer Enrique Granados.  We'll hear Peter Breiner's version for guitar and orchestra.  Music from the time of William Shakespeare will be played by lutenist Nigel North, who will perform a pavan and galliard by John Dowland. To round out the hour, I'll have music for violin and guitar from Niccolo Paganini, his Sonata Concertata in A with violinist Scott St. John and guitarist Simon Wynberg.   Everyone knows Paganini as the great violin virtuoso, but he also loved playing the guitar and wrote a number of works for the instrument.
