Lutenist Christopher Wilke on Next Fretworks

Fretworks usually focuses on the modern classical guitar for most of the recordings I present Saturday evenings at 7, but this week lutenist Christopher Wilke joins me in the studio for conversation about the lute and will perform for us.  We'll hear a sonata by 18th century German composer Johann Adolf Hasse. Christopher Wilke's playing has been praised for its technical expertise and range of expressiveness and as you'll hear, his knowledge of the instrument and its history is equally impressive.  Among others, Wilke studied with renowned lutenist Paul O'Dette at the Eastman School of Music. Also on the program this week, the Canadian Guitar Quartet will play an arrangement of several of the Hungarian Dances of Johannes Brahms.  John Williams has a couple of pieces by the great Paraguayan guitarist composer Agustin Barrios, including the Bach-inspired La catedral. And speaking of Johann Sebastian Bach, Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang will be featured in her recording of the Violin Concerto in A minor arranged for guitar and string quartet with the Elias Quartet. Join me for an hour of music for the classical guitar and this week, the lute as well, on Fretworks here on Classical 101.
