Music of J. S. Bach for 8-String guitar on Fretworks

Our next Fretworks broadcast Saturday evening at 7 will feature Paul Galbraith, who plays an 8-string guitar of his own design.  It's held like a cello with a metal endpin coming out of the bottom of the guitar and rests on a specially-designed resonating box that adds to the full, rich sound he produces on this unusual instrument.  Galbraith will be heard in Bach's Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998. Milos Karadaglic, who plays a regular 6-string classical guitar, will perform two lovely pieces from the 20th century by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, and lutenist Hopkinson Smith will have music of Francesco da Milano from the first half of the 16th century. Our guitar concerto offering for Saturday's program will be the Concerto in A by Ferdinando Carulli, who was born in the same year as Beethoven. The concerto will be heard in its original two-movement form that he played for his Paris debut in 1809.  Carulli was so popular there he stayed for a decade, wowing the French audiences who had never heard a guitar played in such a  virtuosic manner. We also have a duo for violin and guitar played by two French artists, Duo Cordes et Ames.  They'll play Seven Spanish Popular Songs of Manuel de Falla.
