From the Lute to Guitar and String Quartet on Next Fretworks

For music of the classical guitar and something for the lute as well, tune in for Fretworks Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101.  We'll also have something for guitar and orchestra and guitar with string quartet, and there will be a piece with flute, too. Pepe Romero has a waltz from the great Paraguayan composer, guitarist Agustin Barrios, and Paul O'Dette will play music by the late 16th-early 17th century lutenist Simone Molinaro.  He was one of the composers whose music Otterino Respighi arranged in the early 20th century for his Ancient Airs and Dances. The biggest work on the program is Joaquin Rodrigo's Fantasia para un gentilhombre for guitar and orchestra from 1954 but based on music of the 17th century Spanish guitarist Gaspar Sanz.  Sharon Isbin will perform it with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra.  We'll have a short Entr'acte by French composer Jacques Ibert for flute and guitar as well. From Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino, we have a beautiful piece from 1965  for Guitar and string quartet, his Las Presencias No. 6 "Jeromita Linares."  This work is from a collection of musical portraits of real or imagined characters.  According to the composer,  it represents "a lady that lived in a very humble house surrounded by flowers and where she raised a few eggs."  As a child he was sent there to buy eggs and said, "she was Spanish, simple, and kind."  Guitarist Manuel Barruecco will perform this piece with the Latin American Quartet.
