Rossini on Guitar and Sizzling Vivaldi on Mandolin on Fretworks

The next Fretworks broadcast Saturday evening at 7 pm will have you humming opera tunes by Rossini, but there will be no voices.  The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will play the overture to Rossini's most popular opera, The Barber of Seville, and Pepe Romero will perform Rossiniana No. 1 by Mauro Giuliani with tunes from three more Rossini operas. Mandolinist extraordinaire Pete Ostroushko is a genre-crossing artist who's played with musicians and groups ranging from Norman Blake, Chet Atkins, and Willie Nelson, to the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra.  He will be familiar to many from being a regular on "A Prairie Home Companion," the weekly radio program.  On our program on Classical 101, he'll be the soloist for Antonio Vivaldi's Mandolin Concerto in C. Guitarist Greg Nestor will have music of Miklos Rozsa, the Hollywood film composer, with Three Waltzes for Guitar, based on music from three of his film scores.  Also, The father and son duo of Konrad and Thomas Ragossnig will perform a set of variations by Beethoven for guitar and harpsichord.
