A Cowboy and The Ladies on The American Sound, 6pm Saturday

Above: Soprano Renee Fleming sings "Summertime," from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, with the China Philharmonic Orchestra. It's kind of fun to think about the American cowboy, that quintessentially American man who tends his ranch, lives off the land and grows cracked and leathery from the western wind and sun. And during Women's History Month, it's also satisfying to think about how women everywhere, including here in the United States, have come into their own in so many amazing ways - including musically. This Saturday on The American Sound join me for outstanding performances by two of America's most accomplished women classical musicians. Fleming sings music of George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein, and conductor Marin Alsop leads the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in dances by American composer Samuel Barber. We'll also hear selections from Amy Beach's breathtaking "Gaelic" Symphony. And when the ladies have had their say, we'll round up some cowboy music by Morton Gould. Join me for a cowboy and the ladies on The American Sound, Saturday at 6 pm on Classical 101!

Jennifer Hambrick unites her extensive backgrounds in the arts and media and her deep roots in Columbus to bring inspiring music to central Ohio as Classical 101’s midday host.
