The American Sound Celebrates Women Composers Saturday at 6pm

March is Women's History Month, when we reflect on the contributions of women everywhere and in all walks of life. From the domestic sphere to every corner of the professional world, from voicelessness to the vote, women in America have shattered glass ceilings in every domain. It's difficult to imagine that, at one point in time, some believed that women lacked talent for writing music of substance. Saturday at 6pm The American Sound showcases the contributions of some of America's most inventive and distinguished women composers. We'll hear some fun, jazz-inspired music by Dana Suesse, a composer known in her time as "The Girl Gershwin." We'll listen to a colorful chamber work by contemporary Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon. Gabriela Lena Frank's Peru-inspired music will add a unique multicultural voice to the evening's listening. We'll enjoy a lovely and innovative work by Beth Anderson - and more. Join me for a special tribute to American Women Composers on The American Sound, Saturday at 6pm on Classical 101!

Jennifer Hambrick unites her extensive backgrounds in the arts and media and her deep roots in Columbus to bring inspiring music to central Ohio as Classical 101’s midday host. Jennifer performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before earning a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
