Above: Musicians perform the Meditation from Massenet's Thaïs on instruments made of ice, at the Crystal Grotto - an igloo at Colorado's Beaver Creek Resort. Ah, winter. We've frolicked amid spring flowers, sipped summer sun and luxuriated in fall's flagrant farewell. Time to settle in for the deep freeze. How a person handles winter says a lot about who he or she is. Do you honor your hibernation instinct and hunker down before a roaring fire, or get out and about in the winter wonderland? As the snow and ice heap up outside do you dig deep into denial and pursue warm and woolly indoor activities, or do you dive into the piles of precipitation, skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding to your heart's content? I don't know about you, but we've got a pretty strong hibernation instinct at our house -  at its strongest, in fact, when a batch of newly fallen snow needs to be shoveled off the sidewalks. Hmm. Catch The American Sound this Saturday at 6 pm to hear great music for snow bunnies and winter sloths alike. We'll head to the great outdoors with American composer Carter Pann and experience the adrenaline rush of downhill skiing, and with some glorious choral music by Eric Whitacre we'll give that hibernation instinct a nod - with a snowy connection. Also, for those of us for whom cold is a four-letter word in every sense, we'll have a musical look ahead to springtime with Aaron Copland and music by John Corigliano reminiscent of old-time summer concerts in the town gazebo. Plus an American surprise by one of England's best composers. Join me for The American Sound Saturday at 6 pm on Classical 101!
