The cash-strapped New York City Opera plans to put "a couple thousand" lots of stage sets, costumes and other production materials on auction next month, according to The New York Times. City Opera spends upwards of half a million dollars a year - about twice what it would cost to rebuild sets and costumes for a revival - to store its production stock in the 60,00-square-foot warehouse and dozens of trailers the company currently uses, City Opera General Manager George Steel told The Wall Street Journal. The Los Angeles-based Tiger Group will hold the auction, which is scheduled to begin in mid-January and will seek to sell about 90 percent of City Opera's production stock.
