Woman returns to prison to play in orchestra

In the late 1990s, Sarah Jane Coffman was found guilty of murder and sent to Alaska's Hiland Mountain Correctional Center. She was released last February after serving 14 years. Most would have expected someone who was incarcerated for 14 years to put as much distance as possible between herself and the correctional facility. However, she prefers to return on a weekly basis. Coffman, a founding member of the women's string orchestra at the prison in 2003, will debut as a citizen member when the two annual holiday concerts are held Saturday. Acclaimed cellist Zuill Bailey will also perform with the women. Bailey, who has become a Central Ohio favorite in performances with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, is already in Alaska serving as Artistic Director of the Sitka Summer Music Festival. Interestingly, Bailey also portrayed a cellist serving a murder sentence in the HBO series OZ some years back.
