On May 28, 1937, the city of San Francisco inaugurated an orange vermilion suspension bridge spanning the azure waters of San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco Chronicle called it a â35 million dollar steel harp,â? and the musical metaphor has proven prescient: over the next 75 years San Francisco would become one of the most vibrant classical music centers of the world. Join me Sunday, May 27, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., for a special program of music celebrating the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. Weâll hear performances by some of San Franciscoâs world-renowned classical music ensembles, including the Grammy Award-winning male chorus Chanticleer and the San Francisco Symphony, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this season. Weâll also hear performances by classical music greats - like violinist Isaac Stern -who called Frisco home, and music inspired by the cityâs history and natural beauty. Tune in Sunday, May 27th, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., for San Francisco Day on Classical 101!
