The neon-gilded casinos and fly-by-night wedding chapels of Las Vegas will be rubbing shoulders with a brand-new performing arts center as of Saturday, according to a report in the Las Vegas Sun. The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, which opens March 10, will be home to the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the Nevada Ballet Theater and will offer Broadway and Jazz series, as well as family performances and concerts by some of today's hottest popular music acts. John Katsilometes, author of the Las Vegas Sun blog The Kats Report, writes that the center's March 10 opening gala will feature the likes of Randy Travis, Carole King and violinist Joshua Bell. The center, designed by Washington, D.C.-based David M. Schwartz Architects, Inc., comes with a nearly $500 million price tag - nothing a good jackpot can't cover. Read more:
