The flickers off the waters off the coast of Hawai'i aren't just sunlight; they're glimmers of hope. Even as arts organizations around the world continue to struggle under an oppressive economy, in Honolulu this weekend the newly formed Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) will perform its first concerts, according to a report on Hawaii Magazine.com. The HSO formed with the support of Hawai'i business leaders after the Honolulu Symphony folded in late 2010. In a news release, HSO board president Oswald Stender emphasized the fledgling organization's value to its community:
It is our belief that having a symphony orchestra organization in Hawaii is critical to the stateâs artistic and economic vitality.
The orchestra's artistic advisor, conductor JoAnn Falletta, has created a series of concerts featuring standard orchestra repertory and showcasing some of today's most sought-after concert artists. The HSO will perform Beethoven's iconic Fifth Symphony, as well as other orchestral gems, on its March 4 inaugural concert. Read more:
