Violinist Julie Leven and two musician colleagues are bringing classical chamber music to Boston's homeless shelters and making residents feel "elegant," "calm," and "happy," according to a story in the Christian Science Monitor. Leven, a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Boston Baroque, is the founder, executive director and artistic director of Shelter Music Boston, a non-profit organization devoted bringing classical music to the homeless and modeled on a similar New York-based organization. Leven and her colleagues give monthly performances at several Boston-area shelters. With the success of classical music at Boston's shelters - some shelter officials have noted less fighting among residents after the musical performances - Leven says she hopes the Shelter Music concept will spread nationwide. Jennifer Hambrick unites her extensive backgrounds in the arts and media and her deep roots in Columbus to bring inspiring music to central Ohio as Classical 101’s midday host. Jennifer performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before earning a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
