Sergei Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite is one of classical music's best loved works. Pulled from the score for the 1934 Russian film Lieutenant Kije, about a Russian military clerical error run comically amok, Prokofiev's music is a piquant reminder of the idiocies of overblown bureaucracy. If you'd like to hear Prokofiev's music in its original film context, you can watch the long difficult-to-acquire Lieutenant Kije here, with English subtitles. (Audio begins after the credits.) Happy viewing!
