American composer Lembit Beecher has been named the Opera Company of Philadelphia's first-ever Composer in Residence, according to a story in The Philadelphia Enquirer. In creating the Composer in Residence position, the Opera Company of Philadelphia aims to become "the go-to place in America for doing interesting work," said the company's general director David B. Devan. Beecher told The Philadelphia Enquirer that he is considering mining Philadelphia's immigrant history for stories that could be used in librettos for new operas.
