New York Phil To Help Train Chinese Orchestral Musicians

Leaders of the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra have signed an agreement to collaborate in building an institute for training Chinese orchestral musicians, according to a post on WQXR's blog.

The Chinese system is modeled on the Russian system, which doesn’t really train people to be an orchestral musician. You’re groomed to be a soloist. But there’s no actual training to create orchestral players

Said Anastasia Boudanoque, a representative of Columbus Artists Management quoted in the WQXR blog post. Beginning in 2013, the institute will gather 20 to 30 Chinese musicians for advanced training in orchestral playing with members of the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony. The program also will sponsor commissions for new orchestral works, including one by American composer John Corigliano.
