This weekend Opera Columbus presents The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty, a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. Like many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, the setup for Pirates borders on the absurd: The main character, Frederic is apprenticed until his 21st birthday to a band of pirates when his nursemaid mishears his desire to be a pilot as pirate. Unfortunately, since he was born on a leap year (February 29), he must serve until he celebrates 21 birthdays (63 years)! When Frederic falls in love with Major-General Stanleyâs daughter Mabel, she agrees to wait until he finishes his service to the pirates. Must Mabel wait?
