This Weekend: Opera Columbus Presents The Pirates of Penzance

This weekend Opera Columbus presents The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty, a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. Like many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, the setup for Pirates borders on the absurd: The main character, Frederic is apprenticed until his 21st birthday to a band of pirates when his nursemaid mishears his desire to be a pilot as pirate. Unfortunately, since he was born on a leap year (February 29), he must serve until he celebrates 21 birthdays (63 years)! When Frederic falls in love with Major-General Stanley’s daughter Mabel, she agrees to wait until he finishes his service to the pirates. Must Mabel wait? Will their love endure? Find out this weekend when Opera Columbus presents Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance at the Southern Theatre (map). There are three shows:

  • Friday, June 10 at 8pm
  • Saturday, June 11 at 8pm
  • Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 2pm

and you can learn more about the production and find ticket information on the Opera Columbus website or by calling 614-469-0939.
