Sweet Singing at the Stake: Renata Tebaldi as Joan of Arc

Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc) might not be the first heroine to spring to mind from among the dramatis personæ of Giuseppi Verdi's operas. But it was a role to contend with. In recent decades, the opera has received only a relative smattering of performances worldwide, but the list of Joans of Arc in those performances is a Who's Who of sopranodom: Susan Dunn, Teresa Stratas, June Anderson, Montserrat Caballé and Renata Tebaldi, to name a few. Here is a recording of Italian soprana Renata Tebaldi in a 1951 performance of Pronto sono! from Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax4mxfbCUrI They don't make them like that anymore.
