Local artist Justin Withrow designed and painted "The Moth Within," intended to be the first of a series of murals along East Main Street on Columbus' East Side. The "Mural on Main" effort is aimed at beautifying the area between Bexley and Whitehall.

A new initiative will bring murals along East Main Street between Bexley and Whitehall to beautify the area as plans continue for a bus rapid transit line along East Main Street.

Those behind the "Murals on Main" initiative want local artists to design and install large murals that reflect the east side neighborhood's culture and diversity.

"Today we're not just unveiling a mural. We're unveiling a vision," said Columbus City Councilwoman Lourdes Barroso de Padilla during a Thursday press conference announcing the initiative.

Barroso de Padilla stood near the first mural, titled "The Moth Within," a colorful work depicting a caterpillar and moth and "Fairmoor," the area neighborhood.

The work by was designed and painted by local artist Justin Withrow.

"Together we are investing in the story of this corridor, its beauty, its history and its promise. This work connects to the broader vision of LinkUS which will bring bus rapid transit, safer streets and new opportunities to corridors like East Main Street," Barroso de Padilla said.

The East Main Street Special Improvement District is partnering with the initiative.

"Our goal is to make this section of East Main Street safer, cleaner and more beautiful," said Sharon Parsons, who chairs the special improvement district.

Felicia Saunders, who chairs the Mideast Area Commission, said residents want to keep the neighborhood safe. She said she believes the murals will inspire neighborhood children to become artists.

Through the LinkUS initiative, the Central Ohio Transit Authority is planning a bus rapid transit line between downtown Columbus and Reynoldsburg that will go down East Main Street.

COTA Senior Director Aslyne Rodriguez said public art reflects the soul of a community.

Rodriguez said that through LinkUS and other partners, COTA is working to make East Main Street a model of equitable growth, strong local business and connected communities.

"We know that along East Main there is a powerful mix of long-standing small businesses, emerging entrepreneurs and new and future development, including housing that will bring more residents, more customers and more vibrancy," Rodriguez said.
