Painting honoring Ohio-born astronauts commissioned for Statehouse

Ohio has launched 25 native-born astronauts into space, and they’ll be honored with a new painting that’s planned for the Ohio Statehouse.

Charlie Moses, chairman of the Capitol Square Foundation, says it’s the first time in 66 years that an artist has been commissioned to do a painting for the Statehouse.

William Hinch from Toledo will be honoring John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, Judith Resnick and all of the other Ohio astronauts.

Moses says the painting will cost $150,000, but the foundation is raising $500,000.

“We want to collect more money to have an art fund here at the Statehouse, so when pieces of art become available or there are other pieces of art we want to commission, we will have the ability to do that," Moses said.

Moses said the painting will be hung on the wall across from a large painting commemorating the Wright Brothers.

The new painting is expected to be finished and dedicated in January.
