We'll hear about continuing efforts to control the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, with physicist and former Sandia National Laboratories scientist Kenneth Bergeron. Ken is is a physicist who worked on nuclear reactor accident simulation, and the author of Tritium on Ice: The Dangerous New Alliance of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Power, published in October 2004 by the MIT Press.

âThe level five rating applies specifically to the nuclear reactors in buildings 2 and 3 at Fukushima, rather than to the spent fuel cooling ponds that have lost water and where the stored fuel is heating up. âThat implies that the regulators believe the main source of radioactivity coming from the plant has been the reactors. âCertainly, one of the the spikes in readings earlier in the week appeared to coincide with damage to reactor number 2, believed to be a crack in the containment system - the symptoms being a sharp release of steam and an abrupt drop in pressure.
