The number of cases of cyclosporiasis -- the bug that causes explosive diarrhea -- grew by about 1,500 reported cases statewide this past week to 4,013 so far this year.
Last week the number of confirmed cases was 2,576.
The Ohio Department of Health reports that many of the cases are concentrated in the Toledo area, in Lucas County. The area leads the state with 554 cases. Wood County, which is home to Bowling Green, has 446 confirmed cases.
But Cuyahoga County, home to Cleveland, now has the second-highest number of cases with 459.
In central Ohio, Franklin County has 112 cases. Licking County has the next highest number with 31 cases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce in nine states. Two weeks ago, Taylor Farms started a recall of iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico.
