The creation of schools in every town for every child dates back to before the Revolutionary War. In 1647, Massachusetts became the first to establish a right to an education.
The use of taxes, including property taxes, to pay for that education quickly followed and was adopted by many colonies and then states.
But that seemingly simple decision, to use local taxes to educate children, has had very long-term impacts. It’s created a system that many feel has grown out of control.
On this episode of Untangled: The Cost of Learning we are talking about the history of education funding in the United States and Ohio and where it is heading in the near future.
Guests:
- Marty Lueken, director of fiscal policy and analysis at EdChoice
- Susan Kaeser, education specialist for the League of Women Voters Ohio
- Howard Fleeter, economist and research consultant at the Ohio Education Policy Institute
