Columbus accidentally charged 11,000 people an extra $1,000 on water bills

About 11,000 of Columbus' public utility customers were overcharged by more than $1,000 on their latest water bills.

Columbus Division of Water customers may have received a bill stating they owed $1,045 for the city's Clean River Charge. The charge should have been $14.50.

A Division of Water spokesperson told WOSU an error affected customers billed Jan. 1 through Jan. 9. The city said it notified all customers last week and provided them with a corrected bill.

The Clean River fee is a years-long program that goes towards addressing sewer overflows and basement backups to reduce runoff and sewage from flowing into local waterways.

The city said people with billing questions should call their customer service lines any time they receive an unusually high bill.
