Ohio's most populous county is applying for hundreds of thousands of dollars from the federal government to pay for body cameras for its sheriff's deputies.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports the Cuyahoga County Board of Control on Monday approved a request from the sheriff's department to apply for a $700,000 federal grant for the devices.
County officials say the money would pay for about 150 cameras to be worn by deputies interacting regularly with the public. Twenty percent of the money would be allocated to Cleveland State University to evaluate the cameras' impact.
Cleveland has already ordered 1,500 body cameras for its police districts. Lucas County has also equipped some of its deputies with the devices.
Three grant winners are expected to be chosen later this year.
