Otterbein University in Westerville is offering full four-year scholarships to the children of Eric Joering, one of two Westerville Police officers killed in the line of duty this month.
A representative of Otterbein announced the scholarships to all four of Joering's daughters during a Westerville City Council meeting on Tuesday evening.
"Our community hopes this act of kindness will bring some peace to his children during this difficult time by providing them long-term security and support," the school announcedon Facebook.
Joering and fellow officer Anthony Morelli were fatally shot while responding to a 9-1-1 domestic violence call at a Westerville townhome on February 10. A funeral for the two officers was held last Friday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, with Ohio officials and law enforcement from around the country gathering to pay their respects.
During Tuesday's meeting, the Council also voted to retire Joering's K-9 partner, Sam, to live with his family.
Quentin Smith, 30, is charged with aggravated murder for the deaths of Joering and Morelli. He is being held without bail at the Franklin County Jail, and faces a potential death penalty case.
