Best of the Book Nook: Dispatches from the Former Evil Empire, by Richard Threlkeld

During the mid 1960's if you turned on your television set to watch national news programs you really only had three options; CBS, NBC, or ABC. Later in the decade PBS was created and then you had four network choices but prior to the arrival of cable TV at the end of that decade those were your only TV channels for obtaining news of the world.

The three major networks ruled the TV airwaves and they were notable for their fatherly, magisterial voices with news anchors like Walter and Chet and David and Howard K. Then there were the reporters who were sent all over the planet to bring us the latest news. Richard Threlkeld on CBS was one of those memorable voices. After he retired he published a book, "Dispatches from the Former Evil Empire ," that he had begun to write when he was working for CBS in Moscow in what was about to become the former Soviet Union. It was the only book he wrote.

I loved talking to Richard Threlkeld about his experiences as a reporter during the glory days of network news. The Book Nook on WYSO is presented by the Greene County Public Library with additional support from Washington-Centerville Public Library,  Clark County Public LibraryDayton Metro Library, and Wright Memorial Public Library.
