Best of the Book Nook: Helen Fielding and Andrea Dworkin

"Bridget Jones: the Edge Of Reason" by Helen Fielding (original recording made in 1999)

In 1996 Helen Fielding published "Bridget Jones's Diary." That book came seemingly out of nowhere. Twenty years ago Helen Fielding passed through Dayton to publicize her second book "Bridget Jones: the Edge Of Reason" and she came out to Yellow Springs to do an interview.

She explained how that first book originated as a series of newspaper columns she wrote anonymously just for fun. She got such a response to them that she went on to create a series of books that have sold millions of copies.

We had fun that day. She was witty and charming and riding the crest of a wave of popularity as her first book was being developed into a Hollywood film.

"Heartbreak: The Political Memoir of a Feminist Militant" by Andrea Dworkin(original recording made in 2002)

In 2002 I had an opportunity to interview Andrea Dworkin. She had just published her autobiography "Heartbreak: The Political Memoir of a Feminist Militant" and I spoke to her by telephone.

Andrea was a controversial figure while she was living. She died a few years after her appearance on the program. If you conduct a Google search for Andrea you'll find that she's still very controversial and that her views and experiences are very much a part of the current discourse in some circles.
